finding time for fitness

As you know, about a month ago I joined Planet Fitness. I specifically went for the upgraded black card membership so I could use the home gym near my apartment but also the location near where I work.

Admittedly I’ve been somewhat lazy about using the one near work. Mostly it’s a timing and motivation issue. Specifically, when I get out of work it’s late at night and I really just kind of want to go home and any available obstacle (like the gym being packed at that time, no joke) will turn into an easy excuse. On the flip side, going before work is more manageable time wise but then I have to shower there and get ready and figure out breakfast and that’s just too much work.

Again. Any obstacle becomes an excuse.

The saying goes that if it’s important to you, you’ll make time for it. Otherwise you’ll make excuses. (Or something like that.) Well, working out is important. I have a little girl I can’t let down. After a few weeks of making excuses I needed to start making time. Well, really, finding time and then over the weekend I wondered what if I go during work?

So, on Monday, that’s what I did. After eating my lunch I jumped in my car and headed over. The night before I made sure my gym bag was packed and ready to go and I quickly changed and hopped on the treadmill and walked for about 30 minutes. Nothing crazy, but normally those would be 30 minutes spent sitting in the lunch room so this way I was able to log some bonus steps on my FitBit! Plus, the walking on the treadmill is low-impact enough that when I was done I was able to quickly and easily freshen up and head back to my job without it being too obvious I’d been working out.

The Black Card membership allows me to use a non-home gym location up to 10 times a month so at twice a week that’s fine. Since I also hit a sort of off-time (I eat lunch fairly late in the day for most people) the gym was practically empty, which was nice since I didn’t have to wait for a machine or anything. Funny thing is, when I was signing the visiting Black Card log I noticed there were a couple people who listed the Rocky River location as their home gym like me and their reason for visiting this other one was because of work. Looks like great minds think alike!

  1. Glad that you were able to come up with a solution that works. I always tell people who claim that they can find time that it's not about finding time, it's about making time. I think of working out like work, if I'm able to go to work, I can work out. I can't not go to work because I'm tired, or I just don't feel like it. Luckily, I'm an early riser and my gym (for when outside isn't an option) is open 24/5) so during the week, I'm there by 5 and by 7:30 on weekends. Can you roll out of bed, go to the home gym and then come home to shower and eat?

  2. That's what I do for spinning — come home, shower, and eat so, yes, I could. I'm slowly trying to work up the motivation to do that, it's just this weather makes me want to hibernate. Summer I'm MUCH better about getting up early and working out.

I do like the idea of comparing working out to just working, because it's true.
