For nearly 15 years, I gave the scale all the power. I even had a weekly weigh-in blog series called "Face the Scale Friday." Think about that phrasing for a minute: Face The Scale. Like it's a firing squad. Feels that way sometimes, doesn't it? We put so much emphasis on the number that pops up. If it's down, we feel worthy. If it's up, we feel like a failure. We give so much power to the scale, treating it like our judge and jury.
But the scale doesn’t decide anything. It’s an inanimate object. It doesn’t have an opinion about our weight. It doesn’t give a fuck what we weigh and the number doesn’t actually mean anything. But diet culture puts so much fucking emphasis on that number and we internalize the messages, believing our self-worth and value are tied to it.
Your weight is what it is regardless of whether or not you step on that scale. You have value as a person regardless of whether or not you step on that scale. Once learn to listen to your body, you realize your body is all the validation you need. Your body is a wonderful and beautiful thing that keeps you alive and full of life. Once you learn to listen to your body, you realize that your body knows exactly what it wants and needs. It will guide you along the path and you will no longer need the scale to prove or validate your worth as a human being.
All bodies are good bodies. Including yours. (Painting done by @kem916)
