Meet Lady Lazarus

Hi! I’m Jill, the healthy living blogger behind The Year of the Phoenix and this is the story of a girl who grew up fat.

Really, I can’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t heavy or curvy. I required a real bra in 6th grade and have a history of disordered eating. Starting when I was 18, my weight went up in such a way that for the next decade or so I was always wearing my age.

Which is how this journey really starts with me shortly after I turned 29. I wore a size 28 and weighed 311 lbs:

A few weeks after that photo was taken, my little sister sent me an email expressing her concern about my weight. That was the tipping point and about a month later I signed up for Weight Watchers. I had done Weight Watchers in the past, but always hit a wall about six months in. I’d inevitably fall off the proverbial wagon and gain the weight back, plus some. This time, though, something stuck. Maybe it was the reality of my situation and health, maybe it was just the wake-up call I needed, but I have now been on Weight Watchers for three years!

A bit about me: I grew up in suburban Ohio in a town that I lovingly refer to as Stars Hollow (thanks to it similarities to the town from The Gilmore Girls), but I live in Cleveland now. I have my BFA in creative writing and my Masters in Library & Information Science and I currently work as an academic librarian. In true cliched librarian fashion, I have two cats and while I’m technically the owner I’m not naive to the reality of the situation.

The Year of the Phoenix was started in January 2012 as a way to mark the threshold of entering my thirties. But as the months went on, I realized it was this part of my life was the true story that needed to be told, so in May 2012 I changed perspective and now focus primarily on writing a healthy living blog.
I also love hearing from my readers, so if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me at Jill [at] theyearofthephoenix [dot] com.

  1. I found your blog just recently. I'm a 37(almost) year old woman living in Brisbane, Australia. I've been morbidly obese for some years now, over a decade.

I'm a Type 2 Diabetic and I live with Fibromyalgia, an auto-immune inflammatory disorder and PCOS. So losing weight – not easy.

I made a complete lifestyle change in August (something just 'clicked' and I decided one day that I was starting right.this.second).

I've lost 16kgs (I think about 35 pounds in your way?). Clearly I have a loooong way to go, but I've been reading a couple of healthy living/weight loss blogs and I'm finding them (and you) to be so inspirational. I just wanted to finally say that to you.

  2. Thank you so much! I'm so happy you've found my blog and have found some inspiration in it. Congratulations on your weight-loss, too. Don't worry about how far you have to go, always focus on how far you've come 🙂

  3. Just stumbled across your blog thanks to a tweet from Healthy Living Blogs. I've been on my own weight loss journey since February 2012. It was fairly linear at first, as I dropped over 60 pounds. But since then I've yo-yoed pretty hardcore as I haven't yet learned how to maintain healthy habits when under extreme stress (I'm currently merely 30 pounds down from my highest weight). I'm absolutely not going to give up, though! I *will* lose 140 pounds (in a health way) eventually!

Anyway, just wanted you to know that I am SO inspired by seeing people who have succeeded at dropping large amounts of weight and keeping it off. I also have a dream of building a successful blog, so I'm inspired by other successful healthy living bloggers as well! And to top it all off, I live in Cuyahoga Falls (which is not too far from Cleveland, if you're not familiar with it). So I was all “ooh! A healthy living blogger who has lost a ton of weight and lives nearby! Must follow!”. So yeah, I look forward to reading more from you!!!
