Hi! I’m Jill, the healthy living blogger behind The Year of the Phoenix and this is the story of a girl who grew up fat.
Really, I can’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t heavy or curvy. I required a real bra in 6th grade and have a history of disordered eating. Starting when I was 18, my weight went up in such a way that for the next decade or so I was always wearing my age.
Which is how this journey really starts with me shortly after I turned 29. I wore a size 28 and weighed 311 lbs:
A few weeks after that photo was taken, my little sister sent me an email expressing her concern about my weight. That was the tipping point and about a month later I signed up for Weight Watchers. I had done Weight Watchers in the past, but always hit a wall about six months in. I’d inevitably fall off the proverbial wagon and gain the weight back, plus some. This time, though, something stuck. Maybe it was the reality of my situation and health, maybe it was just the wake-up call I needed, but I have now been on Weight Watchers for three years!
A bit about me: I grew up in suburban Ohio in a town that I lovingly refer to as Stars Hollow (thanks to it similarities to the town from The Gilmore Girls), but I live in Cleveland now. I have my BFA in creative writing and my Masters in Library & Information Science and I currently work as an academic librarian. In true cliched librarian fashion, I have two cats and while I’m technically the owner I’m not naive to the reality of the situation.
